Demonstrating Ethical and Professional Behaviors

Professionalism in this occupation implies being non-judgmental, understanding, and compassionate towards drug-addicted individuals. These qualities are essential for creating a comfortable atmosphere for the patients, in which they can freely discuss what is happening in their lives. In the video Crack Addicted Trick Interview-Patrick, the interviewer achieved that, and Patrick could talk about his feelings and personal troubles without fear of being judged or mocked (Soft White Underbelly, 2021).

He spent a considerable amount of time talking about his occasional conversions into a selfish and disrespectful person while being high. At this moment, the social worker must appreciate Patrick’s honesty and willingness to share personal information. Another ethical issue that appeared in the video is related to money. The interviewer promised to pay him for agreeing to give the interview. Yet, when he realized that Patrick would waste it on crack, the interviewer refused to pay him immediately after the interview, as he did not want to contribute to Patrick’s self-destruction.

Engaging Diversity and Difference in Practice

For social workers, it is critical to recognize people’s differences in their socio-economic, religious, and ethnic backgrounds. Patrick opened up and showed the interviewer that he was a religious person, namely, a Christian (Soft White Underbelly, 2021). He demonstrated his faith, for example, while mentioning that Jesus is God. The social worker needs to understand that people are different and the means that are beneficial for them vary. For Patrick, Christianity was helpful; he felt particularly enriched after meditation lessons in his rehabilitation center. Besides, while watching this interview, at times, I would consider Patrick unintelligent. My personal bias was disturbing in some moments; however, I soon comprehended that the world is not black and white, and this person requires support rather than useless judgmental comments. To encourage the client(s) to be the expert in this situation, I would provide him with relevant materials on the issue of drug addiction.

Advancing Human Rights, Social, Economic, and Environmental Justice

To promote social justice in the sphere of drug abuse, the government must provide more funding to drug-related educational classes and activities. In the video, Patrick said that he did not realize it was crack when he started to consume crack (Soft White Underbelly, 2021). At 19 or 20, he had little knowledge about drug substances, their differences, and, of course, their effects. One of the solutions is to facilitate the enlightenment of children at schools about this issue and what harm it can do to a person. What is more, parents should be sufficiently restrictive and controlling if they want to avoid the situation where their young children become engaged in smoking, drug misuse, and alcohol consumption. By doing that, they would protect their children from developing addictions that are extremely hard to eliminate. They would also protect the children’s right to pursue happiness written in the US Declaration of Independence.
