Concept Analysis in Literature

Introduction

Concept analysis brings about complete understanding of theories as well as their use in practice. Nursing career has numerous concepts that require deep understanding for correct application in practice. For instance, plastic and reconstructive surgery presents various complexities to surgeons and nurses. These complexities require common understanding in both theory and practice. However, for this understanding to be achieved, concept analysis must be done. This paper will explore holistic approach, a concept utilized in nursing, with the view of comparing its understanding and use (Love, 2008, pp. 255-265).

Concept Analysis in Literature

Concept analysis is necessary for common understanding to be reached. Holistic approach has been utilized in many areas of health. Holistic approach to nursing borrows heavily from nursing knowledge and expertise. Additionally, it draws from intuition and nursing theories. My area of work, which concerns plastic surgery and reconstruction, considers concept analysis as important since it ensures common ground is reached concerning surgery of patients. It can be seen that understanding nursing concepts is essential to achieve provision of quality services (Love, 2008, pp. 255-265).

Definition of the concept

According to the first article, holistic nursing brings about interconnectedness between patient and nurse. In essence, the article brings the concept of interconnectedness into holistic nursing. It argues that holistic approach leads to close interconnection between participants involved. However, it only provides for connection between people. It should be noted that connectedness could be physical or spiritual. Therefore, this article argues that holistic nursing ensures compassion and responsibility as well as holism. It emphasizes on use of the term interconnectedness in holistic nursing (Love, 2008, pp. 255-265).

The second article defines holistic nursing in terms of virtual environment. It argues that telehealth modalities have bridged the gap between the client and the nurse. For instance, in the past, it was only possible to achieve relationship between the nurse and the client thorough physical contact. However, telehealth facilities have brought a new dimension to holistic nursing since virtual environment is utilized to improve client-nurse relationship. Essentially, it argues that virtual environment has helped improve holistic approach to nursing (Nagel, Pomerleau & Penner, 2013, pp.104-112).

How its definition differs from use in health care

The two articles define holistic nursing in terms of interconnectedness and virtual environment. This is partially possible in practice since some clients may be hostile to nurses who try to forge a relationship with them. A number of obstacles are sometimes faced in trying to achieve holistic nursing. The most common is usually hostile patients. The other difference includes result, which is usually exaggerated in theory as opposed to practice.

Characteristic that defines the concept

My patients are those with need for breast reconstruction. They usually require mastectomies, breast reduction, and facelift, among other needs. These patients are usually concerned about their lives. It is, therefore, necessary that we consider them in whole. Holistic approach provides them with connectedness, this interrelates all their aspects of life. For instance, holistic approach is characterized by approach to totality for the patient.

Conclusion

It should be noted that concept analysis brings about common understanding of concepts. For instance, definition of holistic nursing is examined in both articles with a view to outlining differences in theory and practice. However, it is observable that holistic approach is well defined and there is a strong link between its definition and practice. In essence, it tries to bring a holistic approach to care giving. Moreover, it tries to ensure that clients are appreciated in whole.
