Advanced Practice Nurse Leader’s Interview Project

Abstract

NONPF NP core competencies have been in operation since the early 1990s. Currently, there are nine NP core competencies. Competencies for APNs are different from the entry-level nurses. Currently, competency can be attained through numerous ways comprising of a combination of an effective educational program completion, continuing education program completion, and on-the-job training. The paper below analyses an interview conducted with an advanced practice nurse leader.

Introduction

From the early 1990’s, the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties, NONPF, has been mandated to classify fundamental competencies applicable to all nurse practitioners (Hamric & Hanson, 2013). Core competencies are related to nursing setting because they represent the admission into practice after completion of a nursing course. In the year 2011, NONPF published an updated authenticated set of core competencies for all NPs (Lock, 2012). The paper below analyses an interview conducted with an advanced practice nurse leader. The interview was conducted with the help of questionnaires. During the face-to-face interview, the interviewer was required to inquire the advanced practice nurse’s APN competencies. The questions used during the interviews were open ended.

The interview sought to identify the key competencies required for APN role development. Through this, the interview classified the importance of core competencies in health care organizations. Through the interview, it was established how the interviewee attained his competency. Similarly, the interview revealed how the interviewee demonstrated his competency in his work place.

Description of the NONPF NP core competencies

As indicated above, NONPF NP core competencies have been in operation since the early 1990s. Currently, there are nine NP core competencies. They are scientific foundation, leadership, quality, practice inquiry, technology and information literacy, policy, ethics, independent practice, and health delivery system competencies. The competencies are updated occasionally. The NP competencies incorporate the current masters and DNP’s key competencies. They act as guiding principles for learning programs preparing nurse practitioners to come up with the complete scope of practice as approved autonomous experts (NONPF, 2011). The competencies are indispensable conducts of all nurse practitioners. As such, the nine competencies are exhibited after completion of a nursing educational course irrespective of the population focus of the course. Similarly, the competencies are vital for all nurse practitioners for them to address multifaceted tests of interpreting a fast progressing knowledge into practice and role in the ever-transforming health care setting.

After completion of their educational programs, nurses possess awareness, expertise, and capabilities, which are vital for autonomous clinical practice. The NP key competencies are attained by means of guided patient care proficiencies (Ross & Wenzel, 2012). The proficiencies focus on autonomous and inter-specialized practice and systematic abilities in assessing and offering fact-based patient focused care across settings. The proficiencies also focus on progressive knowledge of the healthcare provision system. Doctoral-prepared nurse practitioners employ knowledge of scientific grounds in their day-to-day activities for excellence care. They are capable of employing their skills in IT literacy. They are also able to participate in a practice investigation to boost health results, strategies, and healthcare provision. Areas of improved knowledge, abilities, and proficiency comprise of enhanced communication skills, teamwork, multifaceted policymaking, management, and health care corporations.

Description of the interview with the APN

The interviewee selected for the study was Stephen Patten. The interview was undertaken on 21 March 2015. Patten is an advanced practice nurse working at the Portland Veteran’s Hospital. He works in a surgical division. Patten works with more than 100 nurses in his department. Together, they handle more than 8000 surgery patients in a year.

In the interview, he revealed that he aids in preparing clients for surgery and convalesce post-operation. He revealed that he habitually centers on two other scopes of influence. The scopes are working with nurses to increase the quality of care and coming up with structures and ways to make surgical treatment safe and successful. He also stated that by collaborating with nurses from different departments he has been able to make certain that the accurate antibiotics are administered to his patients before an hour elapses after surgical operations. He has also ensured that the antibiotics are withdrawn before 48 hours elapses. The consultations have also enabled him to ensure that catheter use is stopped before 48 hours passes after surgical treatment to avoid contamination. He also ensures that patients have been administered with essential medicines like beta-blockers to guard their hearts.

Patten was chosen for the interview for his vast experience in clinical nursing. As an advanced practice nurse, he has worked for 32 years in the health care sector. Before becoming a CNS expert, he worked at a trauma center. Through the interview, Patten offered the researchers with vital information such as the present and the past core competencies’ reports. Similarly, Patten was chosen as an interviewee owing to his reputable success in nursing. The American Nurses Association has honored him for his recommendable job at the Portland Veteran’s Hospital. Based on the above illustrations, it is apparent that he was best fitted to be an interviewee for the study.

With respect to the above discussion, it is apparent that an understanding of the core competencies by nurses is essential. They act as guiding principles for learning programs preparing nurse practitioners to come up with the complete scope of practice as approved autonomous experts. The competencies are indispensable conducts of all nurse practitioners. As such, the nine competencies are exhibited after completion of a nursing educational course irrespective of the population focus of the course.

The most significant competencies with respect to Patten’s practice are direct quality, policy, leadership, and practice inquiry. He has been able to demonstrate the above competencies a number of times in his practice. Through quality competency, he has been able to employ the best available facts to constantly improve quality of nursing practice, assess the relation, fee, superiority, and safety and their effect on health care.

In the interview, Patten suggested that his main ambition was to improve the quality of care by coming up with structures and ways to make surgical treatment safe and successful. With respect to leadership competency, he undertakes multifaceted and advanced management roles to start and monitor transformations, offers leadership to nurture teamwork with numerous stakeholders to advance health care, and demonstrates leadership that utilizes rational and thoughtful thinking. In the interview, he demonstrated how he was able to consult and collaborate with other nurses in different departments in ensuring that the surgical patients’ needs were addressed. Concerning practice inquiry competency, Patten illustrated that he regularly consults with other stakeholders and nurses in different departments. Through this, he has been able to gain more knowledge in different spheres. The above has also enabled him to make certain that the accurate antibiotics are administered to his patients within the appropriate time.

Conclusion

In conclusion, it should be noted that core competencies represent the admission into practice proficiencies after completion of a nursing course. In the year 2011, NONPF published an updated nationwide authenticated set of core competencies for all NPs (NONPF, 2011). Currently, there are nine NP core competencies. They are scientific foundation, leadership, quality, practice inquiry, technology and information literacy, policy, ethics, independent practice, and health delivery system competencies. In the above study, an interview with a nurse leader is conducted. The interview sought to identify the key competencies required for APN role development.
